It depends on the property, the guest count and the setup. Coconut Grove is a neighborhood of the City of Miami, so events here follow the City of Miami special-event rules in Chapter 52 rather than a separate municipal process. The City's definition of a special event covers events that involve the service or sale of food, the erection of tents or other temporary structures, and use of public property. Small and medium events must be applied for at least 30 days before the date and large events at least 45 days, and applications filed late are charged double the application fee. Confirm your specific address and setup directly with the City. VNV Events does not apply for or guarantee permits.
The City states that Coconut Grove applicants are also required to pay a supplementary fee and to attend a Coconut Grove Business Improvement District meeting to present the event for approval. The BID meets monthly and applicants must get on its schedule in advance, so the City recommends starting that process at least 60 days before the event date.
Park events start with a park facility reservation rather than with the permit application. The City's reservation process asks directly whether you are bringing food or cooking on-site, and Parks then advises whether a special-event permit is also required. The City says it responds to a reservation request within three business days to discuss available options and cost.
It can. Under the City of Miami pilot program, a Special Events Affidavit can replace a building permit for tents up to 40 by 40 feet, portable toilets and generators up to 50 KVA at a special event. A tent larger than 10 by 10 still requires a fire safety permit, and additional structures may require an actual building permit. Settle the cover early, because it also decides where the station can safely cook.
